For a small to medium living room, a 200x300cm rug works well, sized so at least the front legs of your sofa and chairs sit on it. For a more grounded, considered look, sizing up so the whole sofa and chairs sit fully on the rug (typically 250x350cm or 300x400cm, depending on your room) tends to work even better, as it anchors the whole seating area rather than just the edges. Both approaches work — the main thing to avoid is undersizing, since a rug that's too small can make a room feel more cramped rather than pulling it together.
For a queen bed, use a 250x350cm or 300x400cm rug, extending 60-70cm beyond each side and the foot of the bed. For a king bed, go up to 300x400cm or 350x450cm. For a single or double bed, a 200x300cm rug at the foot of the bed works well.
A flat weave or low-pile wool rug works best under a dining table, since it won't trap crumbs or catch chair legs the way a high-pile or shag rug can. Size it so the rug extends at least 60-70cm beyond the table on all sides, giving enough room for chairs to be pulled out while still sitting on the rug.
